Investigar el racismo escolar para transformarlo | Reflections from a Seminar at UAB

Last Friday, the Faculty of Education at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) hosted an inspiring seminar titled “Investigar el racismo escolar para transformarlo”, organised by the K-Reporters project in collaboration with the Master’s Degree in Research in Education (MURE).

The session featured guest speakers José A. Caicedo Ortiz and Elizabeth Castillo Guzmán from the Universidad del Cauca (Colombia), who brought critical perspectives on intercultural studies, educational justice, and the role of research in addressing structural inequalities within school systems.

Framed around the guiding question—How can we transform school racism through research?—the seminar opened a space for meaningful dialogue on the persistence of racism in educational contexts and the urgent need to rethink research and pedagogical practices.

Drawing on their experience, the speakers highlighted how research can serve as a tool not only to analyse but also to challenge and transform school racism, contributing to more inclusive, equitable and socially engaged educational practices. Their contributions invited participants to critically reflect on interculturality, the reproduction of inequalities in schools, and the responsibility of educators and researchers in fostering change.

The discussion that followed further enriched the session, creating a collective space for reflection, questioning and exchange among participants.

This seminar reaffirmed the importance of education as a key site for social transformation, and the role of research in advancing more just and inclusive schooling environments.
